‘Sa majesté’

What SM really means? Nobody knows; Sa Majesté (Her Majesty) or Sport Maserati. This SM is now offered on behalf of our customer. In 1966 Citroen commissioned Robert Opron to create a stylish, comfortable car for long distances. Mr. Opron died last week at 89-years in the Paris hospital. We have lost a legend in French automotive design as he was known for the SM, CX, GS, Espace, Alfa Romeo SZ.

Sport Maserati

In 1968 Citroen took over the fountain of Neptune in Maggiore; Maserati. Why? Because of their great engines! Maserati’s Giulio Alfieri created a brand new 90-degree V6 which later was used in Maserati’s Merak. In the SM it was tuned for low-down torque which suits the SM as Grand-tourer. And a GT it very much is: Citroen took it serious and fitted a 90 liter petrol tank and thanks to her drop-shaped design and few air intakes her Cw-value came to just 0.33. As low as the Lamborghini Murcielago.

The SM was way ahead of its time. Citroen introduced their power steering called DIRAVI, a revolutionary self-centering, speed-dependent power steering system, first on the SM. Also the comfort in the Citroen was impressive, functioning with the hydropneumatic level control. This system also controls the braking system. In 1972 the UK-based magazine ‘Motorsport’ wrote “that rare quality of being a nice car to be in at any speed, from stationary to maximum”.

The brake-system is phenomenal too: the SM had the shortest stopping-distance at the time!

This very SM is 1972 car delivered in AC427 Brun Scarabée with a Brown leather interior and a working A/C. The car was sold new in 1972 in Boulogne-Billancourt , near Paris. The original service book is present and documents the maintaince and ownership in the early years. In 1977 it came to the Netherlands. All owners are known the history is complete.

According to a professional 2019 appraisal the body was never welded. Yet has been repainted beautiful in the original color. The interior has been replaced recently. The seats and rear seat have been reupholstered in the correct color ‘saddle’ leather. The doorpanels have been reupholstered accordingly and the carpets have been replaced.

The last owner kept track of everything done of the car in an Excel-sheet. A few of the works pointed out:

  • Hydraulic spheres replaced
  • 4 Michelin tires
  • Steeringrack replaced
  • Rebuild of height-controller
  • Dinitrol Anti-rust treatment
  • A/C service
  • Electronic ignition system installed
  • Tuned the carburators
  • Brakesystem replaced incl. brake-master-cylinder

In the past the engine has been rebuilt. The chain-tensioner has been updated for trouble-free motoring.
