’81 745i – Turbo-powered 7-series

In this weeks Newsletter quite a rare BMW E23 – A first series E23 745i. This 745i was first registered on the 18th of February 1981 and sold new to Mr. Dreffus via BMW dealer ‘Massoneri S.A’ in Dijon, France. The 745i was the Non-Plus-Ultra executive saloon at the time. A Turbo-powered, 252 horsepower luxury saloon. The car was ordered in 060 Polaris over a Marine leather interior, it has the OBC (onboard computer) and Airconditioning.

The car comes with the original French booklets: Owner’s Manual, BMW Service Addressbook and ofcourse the Service book. Showing the car information and original owner. The servicebook shows all the stamps and documents the mileage from 0 to today with 134.000 kilometers. Sold by ‘Massoneri S.A.’ and then dealer maintained by ‘BMW Savy 21’ in Beaune. 

The E23 745i is a rare car by itself, the first series pre-facelift 745i is even rarer. Recognizeable by the BMW kidneys mounted in the sheetmetal, in German called a ‘Blechnase‘ or ‘Metalnose’. The first series 745i came to market in 1980 and produced until 1982 after which the facelifted 7 came to market. We have recently bought this car from a major German collection where the car has been since 2014. A temperature controlled facelity home to roughly 30 (vintage) BMW’s. The car is a very original, surviving E23 – as we like it. The car started life in the Dijon / Beaune area known for a dry climate. The undercarriage is beautiful: rock-solid, never welded on and showing original sills, jack-points and floors. 

The same goes for the body. Very original, not restored and wearing original doors, fenders and lids. A straight car with nice chrome, straight bumpers and nicely factory tinted windows. It features clear headlights in nice black grilles and kidneys in good condition. Quite unique for a car from 1981 – now 42 years old. The interior is just as original –  as it left the factory. Clean original headliner and original blue carpets. Beautiful leather that is still supply and blue. Doorpanels and wood trim in nice condition and a beautiful dashboard. The original leather-wrapped steering wheel is still there. A cool 80’s option is the Boardcomputer (OBC) – all in German.

The engine-bay shows very original. Original stickers and coatings. It houses the ‘M102’ engine. A turbocharged 3,2 Liter M30 engine making 252 horsepower. The trunk is also as it was in 1981: nice carpetting, the complete set of tools and the spare wheel mounted straight up. 

The car drives lovely! The torque and smoothness of 252 turbocharged-horsepowers still amazes in 2022. Very tall gears and a smooth shifting automatic gearbox. Precise steering and lovely suspension and roadholding. We have performed a big service to make this car work as it should.

The car has a German Historic registration with valid technical control (Tüv) until 2024.
