Rare piece of BMWÂ history:
This 1968 BMW 1600 GT is one of 1,255 examples built between 1967 and 1968, following BMW’s acquisition of Hans Glas GmbH. Produced by BMW in Dingolfing on the 5th of March ’68 and delivered to Autohaus Panzer in Nürnberg, Germany on the 12th of March, in this color 023 Granada. This car was in the Dingolfing area in the late 1970’s and hasnt been on the road since 1981.
Introduced by Glas at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the GT coupe featured fastback bodywork penned by Italian firm Frua and built by Italy’s Maggoria. After absorbing Glas’s operations in 1966, BMW continued to produce the GT from September 1967 to August 1968, using their own badging, powertrain, and rear axle. BMW examples are distinguished visually by an updated twin-kidney grille and roundel emblems, as well as round taillights shared with the contemporary BMW 1600-2.
Over the last years this car has been restored extensively. The body has been taken apart completely. The body was taken to bare-metal. It received a beautiful new coat of paint in correct 023 Granada red. It was reassembled with all new rubbers, emblems, re-chromed bumpers and beautiful trim and lighting.
Quite unique: the interior is original for the most parts. That means the original vinyl on the seats and rear bench. Also the dashboard consists of the original vinyl from 1968. The instruments have nicely been cleaned, checked and mounted with repainted bezels. The carpets and headliner have been replaced. This car has the correct wooden 3-spoke steering wheel, which is a very rare item. A new set of seatbelts has been installed.
Technically 100% redone & restored. The matching numbers engine has been rebuilt at a specialist shop. Everything on and around the is new or rebuilt too. Rebuilt Solex, Carburators, rebuilt alternator, rebuilt starter motor, new 123 electronic ignition, new waterpump, thermostat, coolant hoses, filters and fluids.
The Front and Rear axle have been taken apart and every part has been powdercoated. It was assembled with all new bushings, rubbers, ball joints, tie-rods and new Bilstein shock absorbers. The driveshaft was repainted and fitted with new guibos.
The brake system has been rebuilt with a full set of new brakelines, rebuilt calipers, rebuilt master cylinder, new brakecylinders in the rear. New discs, pads, drums etc. The car has it’s factory steel wheels that have been repainted and fitted with new Uniroyal tires and new chrome hubcaps and emblems.Â
The car has been assembled nicely and correctly The panels line up proper and the quality of the paint is excellent. Not an overly restored thanks to a very original interior that keeps the 60’s feel present. The Blaupunkt FM radio plays nicely. After restoration the car was set-up correct. The carbs do their work correct with a good cold-start, idle and power delivery. An alignment was done and roughly 100 test kilometers we’re driven.
