Rare piece of BMWÂ history:
This 1968 BMW 1600 GT is number 87 of 1,255 examples built between 1967 and 1968, following BMW’s acquisition of Hans Glas GmbH. Produced by BMW in Dingolfing on the 4th of March ’68 and delivered to BMW of Italy on the 2nd of April, in this color 060 Polaris. Unique: a copy of the original registration from 1968 is present, this shows a the history. The car was first registered on the 7th of May 1968 – Mr. Giorgio Carmi – born 1926 – was the first owner. The car started its life in the beautiful town of Siena, Tuscany Italy. The city alone is worth a trip, perhaps in this GT?
In 2008 the car changed hands to Mr. Dotti from Carpi, near Modena. In 2013 the car was added to a BMW collection in the Parma area. The car was stored in a beautiful facility with dozens of vintage BMW’s and nicely kept. We have recently acquired this collection of 60’s and 70’s BMW’s.Â
Introduced by Glas at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the GT coupe featured fastback bodywork penned by Italian firm Frua and built by Italy’s Maggoria. After absorbing Glas’s operations in 1966, BMW continued to produce the GT from September 1967 to August 1968, using their own badging, powertrain, and rear axle. BMW examples are distinguished visually by an updated twin-kidney grille and roundel emblems, as well as round taillights shared with the contemporary BMW 1600-2.
In 2010 the car has been restored. The car has been taken apart, stripped and repainted in it’s factory Polaris silver color. This was done fantastic! Possibly the nicest, straightest 1600 GT around. A beautiful and very original body wearing a beautiful coat of paint. The panelgaps are spot and the depth and shine in the paint is beautiful.Â
Quite unique: the interior is original for the most part. That means the original vinyl on the seats and rear bench. Also the dashboard consists of the original vinyl from 1968. The carpets and headliner have been replaced. This car has the correct wooden 3-spoke steering wheel, which is a very rare item.Â
Technically 100% gone through and checked. The original, matching numbers, 1,6L M10 engine runs beautiful. It doesn’t smoke or leak and starts right up. It makes an eager 105 horsepower breathing through the factory correct Solex carburators. Behind that is the original Getrag 4-speed gearbox.Â
The car drives lovely, it’s very light and agile little car and gives a real 60’s sports-car feel while having a chic and classy look. The steering is very sharp and free of play. The suspension does it’s work properly and silently. It brakes excellent for a confident driving experience.
The car has been assembled nicely and correctly The panels line up proper and the quality of the paint is excellent. Not an overly restored thanks to a very original interior that keeps the 60’s feel present.Â
Very high quality BMW 1600 GT now available. Beautifully straight body with excellent paint and chrome. A very original interior and perfect running gear.Â
